Mike Brudenell: More NASCAR fun in Phoenix today? - Detroit Free Press

We saw rain and fire -- and a tweet fest -- at Daytona Beach last week.

Could we have a sandstorm and scorpion plague outside Phoenix today?

The NASCAR Sprint Cup season kicked off at Daytona International Speedway with the most bizarre Daytona 500 ever and one of the weirdest motor sports events on record.

The race started Sunday -- well, almost -- and finished in the early hours of Tuesday morning. In between, we had rain, wind, fire and Brad Keselowski tweeting from his Dodge on the track while waiting out a delay.

How no one was seriously injured or worse when Juan Pablo Montoya's Chevy rear-ended a jet-dryer on the track -- the whole thing erupting in a fireball -- is anyone's guess.

From the get-go, Daytona was about cars crashing, cars upside down and cars ablaze. It was high drama, high octane.

Matt Kenseth's win -- his second Daytona 500 victory -- almost was an afterthought.

That's a shame, because Kenseth drove a great race, topping off a wonderful Speed Weeks for him at Daytona. The veteran driver of the No. 17 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing showed patience, poise and dash when needed. It was a complete performance and is a reminder that Kenseth is as good a racer as there is in Cup.

Today at Phoenix International Raceway, Jimmie Johnson has a chance to get back in victory lane, despite crew chief Chad Knaus' six-race suspension for allegedly tampering with car body-part pieces at Daytona.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has the opportunity to go one better than at Daytona, where he finished second.

Carl Edwards should rebound, and Jeff Gordon might be quick enough to defend his race win at Phoenix in February 2011.

Phoenix is full of possibilities.

I've picked Edwards to win, but I won't be surprised if Kenseth does.

And after Daytona, if frogs fall from the sky today at PIR, I won't blink an eyelid.
